Monarch, Sitka, and Fjord: Tasting Notes

First the caveats: it is super hard to get accurate photos of each hue. For that reason, I’ve included links to Pantone swatches I think are close, but still, bear in mind that what I saw on my monitor might not be what you see on yours.

    Monarch and Zest

Monarch, Sitka, and Fjord: Tasting Notes-burnt_monarch_zest-jpg
    Burnt Orange, Monarch, Zest

    Monarch
…is a rich and deep orange, closer to red than yellow on the color spectrum. It’s definitely redder in hue than Zest, and whereas Zest is bright and luminous, Monarch (though still bright) is much more saturated and opaque. If Zest is the brilliant flickering tongue of a flame, then Monarch is the flame closest to the fuse. Elemental, autumnal but vibrant, evoking both the butterfly that is its namesake and, somewhat inexplicably, Alexander the Great.

    Monarch Pantone:

Monarch, Sitka, and Fjord: Tasting Notes-sitka-jpeg
    Forest, Sitka, Conifer

    Sitka
…is a true green, though more on the blue than yellow end of the color spectrum. It shares less in common with the decidedly yellow-green Wasabi than it does with Conifer (Cordura) and Forest (Ballistic), making its arboreal name all the more fitting. (As an aside: I don’t have any Spruce fabric to display here, so hopefully some who’s been around longer than me can fill in this gap.)

Forest and Conifer are, to my mind, archetypal pine greens, evoking Christmas trees, the green in Black Watch tartan, and Bilbo Baggins’s front door. Sitka takes that primeval green and breathes light into it, brightening it but maintaining a rich and saturated hue. Think rolling Irish hills, deep bamboo groves in the heart of summer, the ionic flash of the Northern Lights. Indeed: think of the tree for which it is named.

Monarch, Sitka, and Fjord: Tasting Notes-island_fjord-jpeg
    Island, Fjord

Monarch, Sitka, and Fjord: Tasting Notes-fjord_nordic_island-jpeg
    Fjord, Nordic, Island

    Fjord
…shares an affinity with the pure water and ice evoked by Nordic and Island, but it is nevertheless distinct from the two. Variously described as “petrol” or “gunmetal” blue, Fjord is a far more pleasant name for this glowing blue-grey. The grey undertones are the magic here, conveying depth alongside its brightness. It is the color of a ferry ride on a January afternoon; that point in a glacial fissure where the abyss begins to overtake the sunlight; night falling on a silent harbor. It is oceanic spume and spray and the rippling tides on the Norwegian coast.

@Ilkyway NAILED Sitka! That's just what it looks like.

And Fjord is my new boyfriend, if you couldn't tell.

Sitka looks so different in these photos than the item pages. Now I can't decide if I need to get something in it!

Also echoing @Pokilani, I would've loved some stuff sacks in the new colors!

I agree. I was totally ready to buy a set of stuff sacks in the new colors. I have to ask though...how tempted were you to buy an A30 in Aubergine Sitka? I almost did but I'm waiting for black/grey halcyon.

    This was my reaction too.

I made do with the travel trays. #addicted.

I've been dying to see a green halcyon color, so I'm psyched about Sitka.

These pictures make me much more of a fan of the Monarch as well.... compliments the Burnt Orange quite nicely.

PS: I'm seeing, based on the TB email I got this morning, that plans for the new colors are to only make them available for the Aeronaut Packing Cube Backpack. Hoping hoping hoping that they might make them available for the Tri-Star version as well. Please please please. :)

Ilkyway's top photo makes me wish I'd ordered a Monarch shop bag because I have Iberian and Zest and don't the three look good together? Not that my shop bags are ever seen together unless they're on their hooks in the basement, but still...
