I think, at least in our area, all the yuppies have become NIMBYs that shop at a more upscale grocery store.
It's hipsters and millennials shopping at Trader Joes these days.

You said that you don't use a car. What do you use instead? Do you mostly walk, take public transportation, or do you ride a bike, or use a scooter? That might change what people recommend.

Is it adjusted properly or are you wearing it loose and low? If the straps are too loose, the bag will hang low and be uncomfortable.

I think I'd go with a large zip top shop bag. Pick one of the more "manly" colors that appeals to you. It's one of the more versatile bags and also one of the more budget friendly.

My handbag (alternates between a travel cubelet or a small cafe bag) stays on the coat hook with my jacket. I take it with me every time I leave the house.

It kinda depends on how you define "girly", but I like KAVU bags.
Alas, they don't have o-rings, but then most bags don't :(

Lately I've been loving the small cafe bag (for my stuff) paired with an s19 for my kid's stuff.

Yes please!! I really like my cafe bag, but don't use often because pickpockets are rampant here.
A ziptop cafe bag would be a-ma-zing! I don't care one way or the other about the flap.

    Zip top shop bag question.

The shop bag without the zip top could be folded into one of itss inside bottle pockets for easy storage.
Can the zipper top shop bags do this same trick?

    Thanks :D
